In the Maltese archipelago, there are three main islands: Malta, the largest; Gozo, the slightly overlooked middle child; and Comino, the smallest, host to nothing but a hotel and the famous Blue Lagoon. As I’d already spent time covering most of the big island, and it was still too grey and rainy to play in a lagoon, I skipped Comino and headed straight to Gozo. Gozo-ites (Gozoans?) can be quite proud of their home, an impression that I picked up when an overeager friend-of-a-friend sent me a massive e-mail of things to see and do on an island that’s only 15 km across. I decided to just pick through the best of his suggestions and make a day trip out of it. Included in my adventure was a trip to the Ġgantija Temples, devouring about a million of the famous honey ring pastries, wandering about windmills, and encountering an amazingly creepy guide at the archaeology museum who insisted on giving me a private tour. Should you ever go, politely decline the offer.
At the end of the day, as I was taking the ferry back to the main island, I suddenly realised that I’d now seen the Mediterranean from all possible angles.
