There’s a particular pleasure in travelling slowly.
There’s the opportunity to spend less time running around, desperately checking off sights on a must-do list, and more time to simply stay still and soak up the atmosphere. You can visit a far-flung neighborhood, stay in a park and people-watch, take an afternoon to sit in a cafe, or even just go for a long walk from one end of the city to another.
When an extra week opened up in my schedule for Istanbul, I rushed to take it slow. It’s been a while since I’ve done anything in B&W, so I decided to practice a bit around the neighborhood I was staying in. I doubt I would have been able to do so if I only had three days, running around trying to see all the ‘important sights.’
Below are photos from a long walk through Istanbul’s Beyoglu district, starting from Cihangir and ending in Karakoy. Thoughts on the result?

Istanbul, I’m glad I took the time.

I so agree about travelling slowly – just soaking up a place is so much more interesting to me than shuffling around museums and “must-dos” all day long. Love these shots – Istanbul is such a vibrant, colourful city, so it’s interesting seeing it pared back to B&W. And I loved Beyoglu too!
That’s part of the charm of black and white, I think – sometimes colour is distracting, and paring it down shows you a different side of a place!
This is a great idea. I never shoot in black and white but I think I’d like to set some time aside for a b&w only photo walk.
Do it! You get a whole different perspective! :)
The black and white give the city such a cool, old European feel. love.
고마워! :)
So nice that you were able to travel slow! That is the best. The pictures are gorgeous!
Thank you kindly, Rika :)
Really nice editing on these!
Thanks buddy…there was good light that day to make the job so much easier ;)
Traveling slow is awesome. We only had 4 days in Istanbul and it both not enough and rushed. Love the B&W pictures. The Turkcell car with the little bug ears is neat.
I was SO perplexed by those, ha!
These photographs are fantastic! Although I’m a die-hard colour photography person, there are some instances where black and white photography really lends itself to the scene. This is definitely one of them!
I definitely agree :)
Loved your photographs. Especially the ones with empty streets. Sometime back, I took a long. slow walk around Brooklyn and Manhattan. The city looks vulnerable when I took my time to sift through the streets.
Vulnerable…I like that!
I like stopping for a Turkish Coffee when I’m wandering around Istanbul. This way it forces you to sit and wait patiently while it’s prepared. Then when it’s served, you have to wait some more, for the grounds to settle. Finally – you sip it slowly.
If there’s one lesson a cup of Turkish coffee can teach us — it’s “slow down”.
Great photo’s – brought back some great memories. This city is in my Top 5 global destinations.
You know, I never thought of Turkish coffee that way…will have to try that next time in Istanbul! :)
awesome photos as always! :) good job Naomi!!!
I thought of you so often in Istanbul!! You’d love it! ;)
